Thumbnail image for greenhouse.jpgThe consumption of fossil fuels is one of the biggest problems in today's society.  Though cars get blamed as the culprit, buildings consume about half of the energy in the world today (Gissen).  Mechanical systems within the building are now being redesigned and rethought to consume less energy.

The fuel efficiency of automobiles and efficiency of gas powered engines has gained much interest in recent years.  Fuel prices have been rising, there is growing concern about the environment and global warming, and the U.S. is dependent on foreign countries for its oil.

There are many challenges that face engineers regardless of their discipline or concentration. Whether designing a water treatment plant, a power grid, or a car, we carry a critical responsibility. We must protect and improve the environment for future generations.  This responsibility has become even more significant in recent years as engineers are being called upon to accommodate the environment in all their designs.
