Resistance, in particular the kind that is in opposition to motion, may or may not be beneficial. All motion resistance involves one object's atoms bumping against another object's atoms and exchanging kinetic energy, which on a microscopic level is heat. For example, any good scout can start a fire by rubbing two sticks together, causing the surface wood molecules to vibrate faster and faster until their frenzied dance leads to combustion with oxygen.
