We're back!
After seven years of not publishing The Manhattan College Engineer, the engineering magazine that defined the Manhattan College School of Engineering is back and here to stay.
The very first issue of the Manhattan College Engineer came out over 60 years ago, and was marked as the official publication of the Manhattan College School of Engineering and the Manhattan Engineers. The Manhattan Engineers was a student organization for all engineering disciplines, which was charged with runnign the Engineer. One may ask, how could we bring back the Manhattan College Engineer without the Engineers? Simple: the Manhattan Engineers are back too!
After a steady publishing schedule from the early 1940s to the late 1980s with intermediate releases through the early 90s and 00s, the Engineer is set and ready for a steady stream of three publications per year: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Some alumni or faculty members that attended Manhattan College remember the Engineer but ask any current student and you will be met with a blank stare.
When picking up a past edition of the Engineer, one steps into an ancient world of technical engineering articles which discuss the impossibilities of a miniaturized computer or an artist's conception of what the Throgs Neck Bridge may look like after construction. There is also an overwhelming presence of professionalism. From undergradute student articles, graduate student articles, professor-submitted articles, and advertisements ranging from Lockheed Martin to General Motors, the Engineer presents itself as a professional student-run engineering magazinel. This is the goal for the new Engineer as well.
Past editions were included in the ECMA which is the Engineering Colleges Magazine Associated, an organization that includes schools such as California University at Berkeley, Cornell University, and Virginia Tech. As the new Engineer grows and tries to reach its past accomplishments, which it will, one of the major goals is to become a member of the ECMA again.
The Manhattan College Engineer is not a new publication in any way, however, as the magazine comes back up to full speed I ask my fellow engineering students to help this publication get its feet off the ground again. This is our publication, our time to shine and show other schools the quality engineers we are and what we can accomplish together. Any technical articles or articles on projects that you may be working on can be submitted to the Engineer and will give you an opportunity to be published.
College is the last step before the rest of your life. Get involved, stay involved. Every engineer at Manhattan College should become a member of the Manhattan Engineers. The name of the organization itself clearly states that every engineer is, practically by default, a member.
As the new website for the school of engineering is launched and the Manhattan College Engineer is brought back, it is a great time to get involved. The Manhattan Engineers are now responsible for both mediums and plan on giving the students of the school of engineering much in years to come.
Come join myself and my team as the first members of the newly developed Manhattan Engineers. I hope you enjoy the new and improved Engineer and have a great end to your semester. Enjoy your summer and see you in the Fall.
